BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – IN their continuous quest to rid St. Kitts and Nevis of illegal firearms, ammunition and drugs, members of the Federation’s security forces were busy combing through the Cayon area early Friday morning (May 7) which resulted in a number of persons being arrested.

Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) with responsibility for Crime, Joseph Liburd, told SKNVibes that as a result of the exercise, “four 5.56 or M16 rounds of ammunition were found at the home of Lashaun Dore of Upper Cayon”.

He informed that Dore was arrested and has since been charged with illegal possession of ammunition.

As a result of the same operation, Cleon Warde of Cayon was taken into police custody after a single round of  .22 ammunition was found in a car that he was driving.

The Assistant Commissioner indicated that a number of other persons were arrested on “suspicion of various crimes”. Some of these, he said, have been released from police custody while others remain.

He advised that inroads have been made into the other cases in which firearms were found and seized by the security forces.

An operation conducted in the McKnight area on Thursday last (May 6) by members of the Anti-Gang Unit resulted in one .45 pistol and five rounds of matching ammunition being found.  Police had informed that a 17-year-old was taken into custody regarding the find.

ACP Liburd explained to SKNVibes that the juvenile has since been charged with one count each of “possession of ammunition” and “possession of a firearm”. SKNVibes understands that the teenager has already made an appearance before the Magistrate Court to answer to his charges and has been remanded to Her Majesty’s Prison.

Tau Charles of Cayon has been slapped with two charges - “possession of a firearm” and “possession of ammunition”. His charges follow the execution of a search warrant at “a home in Cayon” during the same early Friday morning (May 7) operation.

A police press release informed that a .380 pistol, six rounds of matching ammunition, a 5.56 rifle magazine and four rounds of 5.56 ammunition were found at that residence.

Information reaching this media house indicates that Charles was taken before the Magistrate Court and has since been remanded to Her Majesty’s Prison.

Since the commencement of the year, the security forces have removed 21 firearms from the Federation’s streets. And according to Liburd, investigations into the others are ongoing.
