GIS Press Release

Road Town, Tortola - Premier Honourable Ralph T. O’Neal, OBE, on behalf of the Government and people of the Virgin Islands today congratulated The Right Honourable David Cameron, MP, as the new British Prime Minister.

Prime Minister Cameron’s Conservative Party secured 306 seats marking their return to Government in over 13 years following a coalition deal with the Liberal Democrats.

In a congratulatory letter dispatched to the new Prime Minister today Premier O’Neal congratulated him on his “impressive win and for retaining your seat in the Witney constituency which again is another vote of confidence in the leadership and representation you have given your constituents over the years.”

Premier O’Neal added, “The entire world witnessed first-hand your leadership in action as you exhibited the traits of a transformational and conciliatory leader working with the Liberal Democrats to achieve political stability in the interest of the people. Needless to say those are the perfect attributes for anyone assuming the leadership role in Government at this time.”

As minister with responsibility for tourism, Premier O’Neal invited the Prime Minister and his family to holiday in the Virgin Islands. “I recognise that you fought a good fight and the BVI will be the perfect backdrop for a well-deserved rest.”

Premier O’Neal gave his assurance that “the people of the British Virgin Islands will continue to pray for your divine protection and wisdom as you begin your transition as the UK’s youngest Prime Minister in almost 200 years.”

The Virgin Islands is an Overseas Territory of the United Kingdom and fosters a meaningful relationship with the UK spanning external relations, security and defence.
