Road Town, Tortola - Staff in the Ministry of Finance and the International Finance Centre attended a motivational workshop at the Public Service Training Centre and reported it was not only entertaining, but they are now more motivated to achieve career milestones.

Over 40 participants attended the workshop on Wednesday and commented positively on their experiences.

Mrs. Barbara Pickering-St. Rose of the Project Support Services Unit commented at the end of Wednesday’s session: “It was a very educational day. I really enjoyed the information and the presentation....What I am taking is a better understanding of motivation.”

Mr. Delroy Jennings of the Budget Unit said, “I had an excellent and encouraging day. I learned that a level of trust is important so that you can relax and release negativity.”

The workshop was the first in a series of motivational workshops organised for the Ministry of Finance and its departments. The third workshop is being held today and targets the Department of Information Technology.

In an interview with the Department of Information and Public Relations, Human Resources Manager in the Ministry of Finance Mr. Jeremy Hodge said, “The motivational workshops are an effort to boost the morale of our most valuable assets, our employees.”

The facilitator is Ms. Dorian Lennon, a professional trainer with over 30 years experience in training and group facilitation, social work, project management, human resource management and health care.

At Wednesday’s session, Ms. Lennon said, “Motivation comes from within and on the outside; people need to create the environment in which staff can find that inner motivation.”

Ms. Lennon added, “Being motivated is also like bathing. It is something that is recommended daily.”

The facilitator also referenced her own experiences in human resources and nursing to emphasise the necessity of staying motivated in order to succeed.

The motivational workshop incorporates self, trust and team exercises, along with a presentation focussed on engaging participants in motivation and de-motivation factors. The series of workshops will conclude on May 19.

The departments under the Ministry of Finance are the BVI Post, Her Majesty’s Customs, the Departments of Information Technology, Inland Revenue and Treasury, and the International Finance Centre.

The motivational workshops are in keeping with the vision of the Ministry of Finance to be a highly professional and competent, results-oriented organisation; that is committed to providing effective financial management of the Territory's resources through timely, thorough and accurate financial and economic analysis.
