Woman, child pulled from wreck

By: Terresa McCall, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – A couple of men sprung into action this afternoon (May 14) to assist in the removal of a woman and her child from a badly damaged omnibus that was involved in a traffic accident.

Information reaching SKNVibes indicate that at about 4:09 p.m., the bus which bears the registration number H9361 was travelling behind pickup PA4307 westward along Wellington Road when the incident occurred.

It is also understood that shortly before the incident occurred, the driver of PA4307 reduced his speed of travel in preparation to turn left into LIME’s yard – opposite the Power Station - when it was struck from behind by H9361. The impact threw the pickup into a tailspin and was deposited in the gateway to LIME’s compound while the wrecked omnibus came to a halt on the right hand side of the road.

An eye-witness told this media house that official assistance was called for but when the urgency of the matter was realised, a couple of men - with the aid of another pickup - constructed an apparatus which was fastened to the badly damaged front passenger door, behind which sat a woman and her child.

The witness explained that the other end of the apparatus was attached to the pickup and was used to pry the door away from the frame and remove the woman and the child from the vehicle. This attempt was reportedly successful and both mother and child, along with the driver of the omnibus, were taken to the Joseph N. France General Hospital for treatment.

While rumours are rife about injuries suffered by the three occupants of the omnibus, at news time SKNVibes was unable to confirm.

SKNVibes spoke to Officer Percy Daniel of the Traffic Department, who indicated that he was at the time unable to offer any information about the incident as he was in the process of conducting investigations.
