BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – FIVE individuals were arrested and charged with drug and traffic offences following a Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force’s Traffic Department-led operation.

During the late hours of Friday (May 14) evening and early Saturday morning, the Traffic Department, with assistance from officers stationed at the Frigate Bay Outpost and the St. Kitts Nevis Defence Force, manned vehicle checkpoints, which were dotted across the stretch of road from Canada Estate westward to West Farm as well as in the Frigate Bay area.

Sergeant Calvin Amory of the Traffic Department told SKNVibes that the entire operation lasted approximately three and a half hours, during which time some 120 were stopped and 52 of them searched.

In addition, he indicated that some 120 persons were stopped and searched for drugs, firearms and or ammunition.

Resultantly, Zamfir Taylor of New Road was arrested and charged with possession of cannabis.  Junie Williams of Conaree and Ricky Liburd of Nevis were similarly charged.

Kelvin Herbert of Conaree and Mario Lemus of Saddlers Village were separately charged with counts of “driving without a license” and “driving without insurance”. Herbert, SKNVibes understands, was also charged with possession of cannabis.

All are expected to appear before the Federation’s magistrate court shortly.

SGT Amory told SKNVibes that the operation also resulted in a number of other persons being ticketed for failure to display their license sticker and also having their vehicles fitted with “unauthorized lights”.

He described the operations as a success and explained that its main aims were to increase the Traffic Department’s visibility, promote compliance with the Federation’s traffic laws and to promote general law compliance.

Amory reminded road users that compliance to the Federation’s traffic regulations holds a wealth of preventative value. He reiterated that “the life you save might be your own.”
