Road Town, Tortola - The Ministry of Finance will host a special open house and career day on Tuesday at its offices in the Central Administration Building, as part of the government’s Public Service Week activities.

“The Ministry of Finance is opening up its doors to anyone interested in a career in Finance,” said Mr. Jeremy Hodge, Human Resources (HR) Manager.

“We are also representing Team D – Eagles, and this is only one of our major efforts to be crowned number one at the end of public service week,” said the HR Manager.

Activities planned include guided tours throughout the office which is located on the third floor of the Central Administration Building in the West Atrium. Visitors will have the opportunity to discuss career opportunities available within the ministry, and also meet with members of staff who will describe their core job functions and responsibilities.

The Department of Information Technology, which falls under the ministry, will give demonstrations of new technology used throughout government today.

“We felt it necessary to include the Department of Information Technology as they are an integral part of government. The Ministry of Finance and the wider government can only function if that department is also functioning,” said Mr. Hodge.

Another feature of the ministry’s open house is a power point presentation which will outline the role of the ministry and its various units.

“The career day is specifically designed to change the perceptions of having limited career options in finance. There are many career fields available like economics, accounts, statistics, project management, quantity surveying – just to name a few,” said Mrs. Collene Hazel, Executive Officer with the Ministry of Finance.

The executive officer also encouraged participation. She said, “Tomorrow, all questions will be answered. We want persons to see what the Ministry of Finance can offer them in this day and age. The open house is going to change individuals’ perceptions about limited careers in finance. It will also inform individuals that it is not just about the money aspect.”

Visitors are also encouraged to visit the Premier’s Office, also a part of Team Eagles, on the third floor of the East Atrium.

Public Service Week was established in 2001 to encourage camaraderie and honour civil servants. The theme of this year’s week is Modernising the Public Service for 2010 and Beyond.
