BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – THE irresponsibility of some motorists and the need for more care and caution to be exercised by road users were again highlighted at recent sittings of the Federation’s Traffic Court.
Last Thursday (May 6), seven persons were convicted of traffic violations and handed punishment in accordance with the offences.
Tabernacle resident Tyrone Nisbett, who was charged with a December 20, 2009 offence of “driving off the bus route”, was convicted and fined $100 to be paid forthwith or serve one week at Her Majesty’s Prison.
For operating a motorcycle without the appropriate headgear, Clement Thomas was convicted and fined $100 to be paid forthwith or spend seven days at Her Majesty’s Prison. The offence was committed on September 14, 2009.
Peter Apps of Frigate Bay was convicted of “driving under the influence” and fined $600. The sum is to be paid within one month or, in default, a 14-day custodial sentence would be imposed.
Lime Kiln resident Dave Esdaille was convicted of a November 2, 2009 offence of “driving with due care and attention” and fined $600 to be paid within two weeks or 14 days imprisonment.
Malone Avenue’s St. Claire Kelly, for a January 31, 2010 offence of permitting another person to drive without insurance, was convicted and fined $300 to be paid within one week or serve one week behind bars.
Convicted of a March 2, 2010 offence of “driving off the bus route”, Elroy Stevens was ordered to pay $100 forthwith or serve seven days in prison, while Saddlers resident Romeo Richardson was convicted of a similar offence and fined $500. Richardson committed the offence on March 3, 2010.
During this week’s session of Traffic Court, two persons, Arnold Wilkin of St. Johnston Village and Terrance Bridgewater of Lime Kiln were convicted of driving without due care and attention.
Wilkin committed the offence on October 19, 2009 and was fined $650, which is to be paid within three weeks or, in default, would have to serve 14 days at Her Majesty’s Prison.
Bridgewater’s offence was committed on December 7, 2009 and he has been ordered to pay a $200 fine forthwith or serve one week behind bars.
