BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS – May 25th 2010: A small act of kindness has resulted in a major thank you for the Rotary Club of Liamuiga (St. Kitts). When the members of the seven year old Rotary Club decided last November to contribute US$4,000 to the victims of Typhoon Morakot half way around the world in Taiwan, the last think they expected to receive was a Government Proclamation.
At a meeting of its Club two weeks ago, the Club was the recipient of a Proclamation from the Kaohsiung County Government, officially thanking the members for their kindness. The translation read in part, “…….sincere appreciation and gratitude for your generosity of a financial donation which has been transferred to the restoration and construction project of Da-Ai Village.” Resident Ambassador for the Embassy of the Republic of China on Taiwan, Rong-Chaun Wu, also a member of the Rotary Club of Liamuiga, handed over the original and translated documents to the Club President, Laverne Caines.
“I am honoured to present these documents on behalf of my country as an expression of the appreciation of the Club’s donation to the victims of Typhoon Morakot,” he said. Accepting the documents, Mrs Caines said that she was touched by the extent of the response, which she described as a genuine acknowledgment of the humanitarian gesture made by the Club.
But the County Government was not the only body to recognise the Club’s contribution. In a letter from District Governor of 3510, Lin Chao Hsiung, thanks were also expressed on behalf of the government. “You will most likely never meet the recipients of your generosity, but know that the quality of their lives will be enhanced by your gifts,” wrote District Governor Lin.
“I humbly accept these expressions of thanks on behalf of the members of the Rotary Club of Liamuiga. I believe it is fair to say that our Club has been ‘internationalized’ by these two acknowledgments of our donation. This only goes to show how small acts of kindness can bring organisations and indeed countries closer together. We are extremely happy that our gift was received with such deep gratitude,” she stated.
