BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – IN its ongoing programme of heightened visibility, the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force’s Traffic Department had conducted a “Vehicle Checkpoint” (VC) operation in St. Kitts on Friday, May 21.
Sergeant Calvin Amory of the Traffic Department informed SKNVibes that the operation took similar format to the last one which was conducted on the previous Friday. He explained that in conducting the operation, the department collaborated with officers and soldiers of the Frigate Bay Outpost and the St. Kitts-Nevis Defence Force, respectively.
Three VCs were established from 11:00 p.m. on Friday in the vicinity of Bobsy’s Bar and Grill, Potato Bay and Halfmoon Bay, and within three hours more than 200 vehicles were stopped, some of them searched and a number of persons ticketed for traffic infractions.
“In total, we stopped 223 vehicles and 55 of them were searched. Of the vehicles which were stopped, we had to issue eight tickers to drivers for traffic violations. These violations were unauthorised lights, unlicensed vehicles and also for driving their vehicles with one front light,” Amory said.
He pointed out that the exercise was not designed for only stop and search of vehicles, but also the searching persons within the vehicles.
“We also searched 120 persons, and of those three were reported for having controlled drugs in their possession. The searches were for drugs, guns, ammunition and other weapons, and no guns were found but two cutlasses were seized and taken into police custody,” Amory explained.
According to SGT Amory, during the operation, Gary Carey was arrested and charged with “driving without being the holder of a valid driver’s license”, “driving without insurance” and “taking vehicle without consent of the owner”.
Meanwhile, three individuals, who appeared at the Traffic Court yesterday (May 27), were convicted of violating traffic laws. Two of them were reprimanded and the third one was ordered to pay a small fine.
