Basseterre, St. Kitts - St.Kitts-Nevis main Opposition Party the People’s Action Movement has congratulated the Hon. Kamla Persad Bissessar on her party’s resounding victory at the May 24, 2010 General Elections in Trinidad & Tobago, with her Party, having won 30 of the 41 Parliamentary seats.

The Esteemed constitutional scholar Mrs. Persad – Bissessar was elected in a landslide, in a snap general election. Her People’s Partnership was victorious , delivering her a mandate to enact much needed constitutional reforms.

She galvanized a multi – party coalition to topple former Prime Minister Patrick Manning’s PNM government in a surprise to the veteran leader who undoubtedly thought that the early election would disadvantage the opposition.

People’s Action Movement Deputy Chairperson Ms. Cyndie Demming lauded the achievement of  Prime Minister elect Persad-Bissessar as a beacon moment for all aspiring politicians particular female politicians in the Caribbean.

“Women everywhere should be proud of Madam Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar, especially Caribbean women," said People’s Action Movement Deputy Chairperson Cyndie Demming. Miss Persad-Bissessar’s leadership and rise to the office of Prime Minister is motivation for all aspiring women politicians . The People’s Action Movement, in particular the women of our proud party join the rest of the Caribbean in congratulating you on your unprecedented success and we are confident that just as your leadership provided our party with success in the courts in 2009 that same leadership will provide the people of Trinidad and Tobago with success in the future,” Ms. Demming continued.

Prime Minister Persad – Bissessar’s immense experience in dealing with constitutional matters was enhanced less that one year ago when she formed part of the stellar legal team assembled by the People’s Action Movement to argue the landmark boundaries case.

Her professionalism and brilliance were on almost daily display over the course of several weeks as she articulated the complex issues surrounding the role of the Boundaries Commission and the constitutional framework that provided its authority and instructions.

In a congratulatory letter sent to Prime Minister elect Persad- Bissessar  People’s Action Movement Leader Lindsay Grant praised the new Trinidad & Tobago Leader for her achievements, first as the Political Leader of the UNC and having achieved the majority votes in the elections. This, Mr. Grant said, is a clear indication of the trust and confidence that the people of the Republic of Trinidad & Tobago have in the  leadership of Madam Persad-Bissessar, and in her ability to oversee the affairs of the republic in this tough economic period. The congratulatory letter also made reference to Madam Persad-Bissessar’s involvement and key role in the People’s Action Movement’s landmark Boundary case.

“It goes without saying that Prime Minister elect Persad-Bissessar played a critical role in protecting the rule of law in this Federation and promoting the development of regional constitutional jurisprudence,” said People’s Action Movement Leader Lindsay Grant .

Grant continued “The victory of Mrs. Kamla Persad Bissessar will no doubt be an inspiration for every woman in Trinidad & Tobago and indeed in the entire region. I must say that it is ironic that the same woman who was derided by Prime Minister Douglas along with her colleague Ms. Mia Mottley – Leader of the Opposition in Barbados – as “opposition politicians who have come to destabilize the country” is now a colleague prime minister of PM Douglas in CARICOM,” .

“It is difficult to imagine either woman behaving in such a fashion in the treatment of another Caribbean parliamentarian,” Grant continued.

Prime Minister Kamla Persad – Bissessar was a member of the People’s Action Movement legal team in the 2009 landmark boundary cases and is only the third  woman to become a CARICOM head of government.
