Newtown readies for community league football

By: Ryan Haas, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – FRESH from an overwhelming victory in the St. Kitts-Nevis Football Association’s Digicel Premier League, footballers from the Newtown area will continue to entertain their fans when a community league kicks off there in the coming weeks.

According to league organizer Don Farrell, this year’s competition is to be named after three grandparents “who have paved the way for Newtown football over a number of years”.

“These persons are none other than Ms. Evelyn Chumley, Malcom Maynard and Ms. Edie Isles,” Farrell said.

The ESE East Basseterre Football League will feature six teams participating in one round of competition. When the teams have all played each other, the top two teams will then engage in a best of three final to determine the champion.

With six teams and as many as three matches being played per week, Farrell said he expects the action to be fast-paced and exciting for football fans in the community.

“My expectation is basically for the people of the community to see the upcoming young players,” the organizer told this media house.

“The community team itself, TDC Newtown United, will again get a chance to see young uprising stars. They as a club will then know what to do in terms of approaching these kids to make them a part of the organization.”

All matches will be free and sponsors are expected to come onboard soon to support the community affair.

In addition to the young teams competing, Farrell said a masters squad of former Newtown players would add to the level of experience in the tournament.
