SPIRIT to host Regional Boxing Match on Saturday

By: Suelika N. Creque, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – RESIDENTS of Sandy Point and neighbouring communities are in for a treat by pugilists from the St. Kitts Natural Boxing & Fitness Centre and their counterparts from Anguilla at the Sandy Point Hard Court on Saturday, June 5.

Fight time is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. and boxing enthusiasts are invited to witness two boxers from the local gym matching gloves with their Anguillan counterparts.

Denver Mike, Vice President of SPIRIT, said that what started out as a small fundraiser has now turned into a regional competition.

He explained that apart from the event being a fundraiser, they are also trying to reintroduce Sandy Point to the surrounding communities as a location to host events, as well as creating more awareness for the newly-formed SPIRIT.

In terms of choosing a boxing event, Mike said that boxing is one of the most disciplined sports around, as it takes intensive training and discipline to be a boxer.

“Boxing is also unfortunately a dying sport in our culture, so we thought it was a great idea to host an event as there are also a lot of people interested,” he said.

He said there would be kickboxing exhibitions before the matches begin and this would be done by Red Canvas, which was formed under the St. Kitts/Nevis Amateur Boxing Association.

Mike said the weigh-in would be held on Bank Street tomorrow (June 4) at 4:30 p.m., where the general public could get firsthand experience of boxers weighing for a match.

There will be performances by C-Money and music by MixKluSiv Intl with Dj Rubbers. SPRIT’s primary objective is to adopt the primary school in Sandy Point and to develop its library and resource centre.

They have already launched a book drive that is ongoing at the school. He said the aim of SPIRIT is to serve and empower the people of Sandy Point, while at the same time seek to uphold and protect their community’s values.

The group was launched early May with a walk-through of the Sandy Point community.
