BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – THE six contestants who will be competing in the 2010 Culture Queen Pageant were officially introduced to the general public at the A. L Building in Charlestown, Nevis on Friday, June 4.

The contestants were introduced at an official ceremony along with those competing in the inaugural Miss Culture Swimsuit Pageant.

The contestants are: Ms. Coastal Air Transport, Verna Grant; Ms. Carib Brewery (St. Kitts-Nevis), Travisia Adams; Ms. Dan Backhoe, Trucking & Redimix, Deslyn Dore; Ms. Development Bank of St. Kitts and Nevis, Te-Shell Sutton; Ms. Lime, Ulinda Warner; and Ms. Island Tyres and Hardware Ltd, Mary Wangui Ngunjiri.

More emphasis will be placed this year on the cultural aspect of the pageant and the Swimwear segment was omitted from the competition. Instead, they will compete in Promotional Speech, Talent, Cultural Evening Wear and Interview, and will also make a non-judged appearance in the opening number.

According to a release issued by the new Chairperson of the Culture Queen Committee, Nicole Williams-Lawrence, several weeks ago, the committee felt that the Culture Queen Pageant is intended for intelligent, culturally aware, poised young ladies seeking a platform for their contribution to the development of Nevis.

“We also believe that in the Culture Queen Pageant physical appearance plays a role in the selection process but the emphasis will be on awareness of the cultural and current events, community involvement, personality and talent.

“In this regard, we have sought to separate the Swimsuit segment from the Culture Queen Pageant and to incorporate a Ms. Culture Swimwear Pageant in place of the Swimwear segment of the Culture Queen Show. The new format will involve two shows - the Ms. Culture Swimwear and the Culture Queen Pageant,” she stated.

The activities for the contestants continued with an island wide motorcade in Nevis on Saturday, June 5 and a church service on Sunday June 6.

Lawrence said that although the ceremony got off to a late start, she felt the weekend activities were a success.
