BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – ANOTHER member of the Liburd/Bryant clan has done himself, family and country proud, when he graduated with a Master’s degree from the prestigious Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

News reaching SKNVibes states that 24-year-old Shannon Omari Liburd of St. Kitts was among 1 580 students, who received their Master’s degrees from the MIT, at that institution’s 143rd Commencement Exercise held on Killian Court, Boston on Friday, June 4, 2010.

Shannon, the son of Donna Simpkins-Jackson and renowned national radio personality and show host Juni Liburd, did his Master’s degree in Technology and Policy. The objective of his Master’s thesis was to evaluate the “Solar driven humidification-dehumidification desalination for potable use in Haiti”.

This is the second time the young Kittitian scholar had graduated from the MIT. On June 6, 2008, he had a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering with Honours conferred on him.

As it was in 2008, the young engineer was not alone on that special and memorable day; he was supported and congratulated by both of his parents and younger brother George.
According to his father, “It has been a sacrifice and a struggle for both his mom and I to put him through MIT. But from a very early age, Shannon had always demonstrated to us a will to succeed set goals.

So, this achievement and his past academic success are tangible proof that where there’s a will, there’s a way. His success also highlights the fact that ordinary and grass-root people can succeed at whatever they put their minds to. Therefore, we, the parents and the Liburd/Bryant family rejoice in his achievements.”

Shannon graduated from high school in Brooklyn, New York in June 2004 and thereafter, at age 17, completed the programme for Mastery in Engineering Studies at Houston University.

He also has many achievements under his belt, including Youth Ambassador to Germany, the Ukraine and Japan; Member of the Arista/Archon Society; Student Representative New York City Council Project; and Representative of the Select Programme in Science and Engineering at City College, New York.

Shannon Omari Liburd comes from a long line of scholars, which include his father; his aunt - Minister of Health, Social Services, Community Development, Culture and Gender Affairs, Hon. Marcella Liburd; and uncles Carl and the late Clarence Fitzroy Bryant.
