Traffic Court convictions

    BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – Just about $7 000 in fines is to be collected from persons convicted at the sitting of the Traffic Court on Thursday, June 17.

     

    Presided over by Her Worship Josephine Mallelieu-Webbe, the session saw approximately nine individuals appearing for trial, most of whom pleaded guilty to their charges.

     

    Parsons Villager Calvis Rogers pleaded guilty to two charges of “driving without due care and attention” and, while convicted of both, he was fined $500 on one which is to be paid within two weeks or serve one week imprisonment. He was cautioned on the other charge. The offences were committed on January 3, 2010 and March 8, 2008, respectively.

     

    Lance Fouts of Amory Drive, Buckleys confessed to driving without insurance and driving without a driver’s licence. He was fined $1 000 on the first count and $500 on the second. The fines were to be paid forthwith. Both offences were committed on June 15, 2010.

     

    West Farm Heights’ resident Jennifer Deattie was brought before Her Worship Mallelieu-Webbe on a related charge and pleaded guilty to permitting another person to drive her vehicle, when that person was not covered by insurance. She was however cautioned.

     

    A June 2, 2010 incident resulted in both Venetta Pascal of Lower Shear Lane and Kwame Samuel of John England Village being charged with traffic violations.

     

    Pascal was charged with permitting another to drive her vehicle when that person was not covered by insurance, while Samuel was charged with driving without insurance and driving without a driver’s licence.

     

    In one week, Pascal has to pay a $200 fine or serve one week at Her Majesty’s Prison. Samuel, however, was fined $1 000 on the first count and $500 on the second, which are to be paid within three weeks or serve one month imprisonment.

     

    Nurs Sheika of Buckley’s Site pleaded guilty to permitting Gabriel Grant of George Street to drive a vehicle without being insured and was cautioned. Grant, however, who pleaded guilty to driving without a driver’s license and driving without insurance, was fined $300 on the former count and $500 on the latter. Both fines were to be paid forthwith. The offences were committed on June 4, 2010.

     

    For June 9, 2010 offences of driving without insurance and driving an unlicenced vehicle, Upper College Street resident Glenville Isles was fined $1 000 to be paid within three weeks or serve one month imprisonment on the first offence and cautioned on the second.

     

    Two fines, totalling $1 500, were issued to Haris Shekhani of Camps after he admitted to committing June 9, 2010 offences of driving without insurance and driving without a driver’s licence. The sums were to be paid forthwith.

     

    The only person to have pleaded not guilty during this sitting was Steve Sharry of Molyneaux. He was charged with driving off the bus route and was convicted. Her Worship Mallelieu-Webbe fined him $200 which was to have been paid within one day or, in default, he would have to serve 14 days in prison. The offence was committed on September 24, 2009.
