Sandy Point High to be named in honour of Charles E. Mills

    BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS, JULY 5TH 2010 (CUOPM Press Release) – The Sandy Point High School is to be named after one of the Federation’s outstanding educator and parliamentarian.

     

    The Ministry of Education has disclosed that the Cabinet at its meeting on 31st May, 2010, reaffirmed a previous decision that the Sandy Point High School be renamed in honour of the late Hon. Charles E. Mills, CMG, JP.

     

    Mr. Mills was a former teacher, Education Officer and Chief Education Officer. He was first elected to the St. Kitts–Nevis–Anguilla House of Assembly in 1975 as the St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party Parliamentary Representative for the Electoral District of St. Christopher 5, at the time stretching from Sandy Point to Dieppe Bay.

     

    He was re-elected for the same district in the election of 1980 and for St. Christopher 6, (Newton Ground to Harris’ in 1984 following electoral reform.

     

    During 1975 to 1980, the Hon. Charles Mills served as Minister of Communications, Works and Public Utilities and as Minister of Finance in St. Kitts–Nevis Labour Party Administrations headed by three past Premiers.

     

    In 1984, the Hon. Charles E. Mills was appointed Leader of Her Majesty’s Loyal Opposition, a position he held until 1989 when he retired from active politics. 

     

    The Ceremony for the Renaming of the Sandy Point High School will be held later this year during the month of September.
