14-year-old charged with manslaughter of toddler

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – THE 14-year-old who allegedly ran over a toddler with a vehicle has been charged with manslaughter.

The juvenile was initially said to have been assisting the police with their investigations into the incident but was reportedly formally charged on Wednesday, July 7.

The incident took place on July 3 at a Fountain Village, Nevis home; the same village in which he lives. And according to a police source, the youngster was asked to provide cleaning services on a vehicle parked in the yard. While he was doing so, SKNVibes understands that he attempted to move the vehicle from its position and, in the process, ran over a female toddler.

The tragic incident transpired at about 5:20 p.m. and the child was rushed to the Alexandra Hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries.

A press release issued by the Nevis Branch of the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force indicated that resident pathologist Dr. Adrian Nunez performed a post mortem on the remains of the tot, which revealed that death occurred as a result of “hypovolemic shock”.

This, according to Medline Plus, is “an emergency condition in which severe blood and fluid loss makes the heart unable to pump enough blood to the body. This type of shock can cause many organs to stop working”.

This condition, the release explained, is “subsequent to injuries by a motor vehicle”.

SKNVibes understands that after being charged, the juvenile was granted bail by Magistrate attached to the District “C” Magistrate Court (Nevis), Her Worship Yasmine Clarke.
