Deputy Prime Minister Hon. Sam Condor declared June a month of amnesty for the turning in of illegal firearms |
Basseterre, St. Kitts (June 1, 2006): Deputy Prime Minister Hon. Sam Condor has announced a period of amnesty for the turning in of illegal firearms for the entire month of June.
This is in alliance with the national effort to bring about peace in the Federation through prayer which has been called by the Body of Christ in St. Kitts and Nevis.
During an Address to the Nation on Wednesday Minister Condor said that the issue of crime has taken a forefront on the international agenda "and is re-directing the focus of developmental investment as governments endeavour to implement initiatives designed to enhance the safety and security of people and communities."
Minister Condor challenged the criminal element in society to lay down their weapons of foolish warfare. He further stated that while the law enforcement agencies are doing all in their power to ensure that our communities are safe, "the power of prayer can revolutionize the course of our situations."
The deputy prime minister said that St. Christopher and Nevis was built on a foundation of goodwill and prayer laid by God-fearing forefather and as such prayer should be a key factor in addressing national issues.
He stated emphatically that prayer changes men; lives and nations and that through prayer people are brought into contact with the most powerful being: the Almighty God.
Public employees who wished to be a part of the Prayer March and Rally were granted permission to leave work at 2:30 today.
The event is being held as a march of witness through the streets of Basseterre culminating in a service of prayer for the nation on the Bayfront.
