What are your views on gay marriage?

By: Cherisse M. Sutton-Jeffers, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - FOR many years homosexuality has been a global issue and it continues to be. This topic is often debated by many, including the clergy and politicians as well as gays and lesbians. Homosexuals, like heterosexuals, are entitled to equal rights and opportunities. However, in recent times there has been a turn in events – gay marriages are legal in certain countries.

I am certain that many of us are aware of the saying: “If God wanted man to be with man he would have made Adam and Steve not Adam and Eve.” Does this therefore mean that being gay is wrong? Everyone is entitled to the right of being with whoever makes them happy and also doing the things that makes then happy, once it is within the ambit of the law. Is this not true?

Gay or straight, we are all humans but with different sexual preferences. The Holy Bible states, “Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it is abomination.” It also admonishes one who judges another; therefore, as human beings, who are we to pass judgment on others and even cast them out of society?

As immoral and sickening or as loving and sweet that some of us may find homosexuality, everyone is entitled to his or her opinion. So, in order to justify this assumption, SKNVibes PEP asked a number of persons the following question: What are your views on gay marriage?

Many persons who were asked the question said they preferred not to comment because it would not be anything nice. However, a young lady name Risha said, “In my opinion, I have no problem with them getting married. That's their right if they want to, but my problem with gay marriage is that I do not believe that they should be done in a church, because I feel as though it demeans the sanctity of marriage. If they want to get married they should do it in the courthouse …and another problem I have with gay marriages is when they try to get children involved. I think it confuses the children.”

One young man called Sil kept it straight to the point when he said, “It is an abomination, end of story.”

A man in his late 30s said, “Gay transgresses the human nature, so it is as if they are not humans. So for them to marry, it is an abomination; but for all things to be fulfilled this must be as is. But anyone in agreement with it lacks the knowledge of the Almighty God. A battery needs positive and negative to generate power...it takes a man and a woman to give the power to a new human.”

“I think that it is morally wrong but everyone is entitled to do what makes them happy. Who are we to judge? Being raised in a Christian household has instilled beliefs in me that may be different from others, which is why we have to accept people for who they are and the choices that they make.” A 27-year-old mother of one responded.

“I hate gay marriages…it is not right!” said a young lady who wanted to be known as S. Browne, while Javanna simply added that she thinks it is just wrong and should not be legal.

Latoya Robinson added her input by saying, “Although it’s wrong and the Bible condemns these sorts of acts in Galatians 5-17, God gave every man choices. If they choose to live this type of life then the consequences of their actions will be their fate in the end.”

A recent situation of a gay marriage has sparked a controversy in the Federation as a young Kittitian, who has been residing overseas for about two years now, has recently tied the knot with another young man. There is a video on You-Tube where the two speak about their relationship and the way they met.

Now that you have heard these people’s views on this topic, what are yours?
