Rain damages section of Warner Park wall

By: Cherisse M. Sutton-Jeffers, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – FOLLOWING Monday night’s (Jul. 19) thunderstorm that lasted until early Tuesday morning, residents of Lazack Road awoke to see a section of the southern wall of the Warner Park Cricket Stadium damaged.

According to a female resident, at about 4:00 a.m. on Tuesday, she was awaken by a loud cracking sound. On looking through her window, she saw a section of the wall opposite her home was damaged, causing it to lean precariously over the parapet on the southern side of the Cricket Stadium. A utility post was also damaged.

When employees of SKNVibes arrived at work, a number of men were seen erecting barriers to prevent pedestrians from using the parapet within the immediate area of the damaged wall.

Sometime later, a number of government officials, including Minister Glenn Phillip and Permanent Secretary Lloyd Lazar, arrived at the scene and were inspecting the damage.

One official told this media house that they were uncertain of what caused the wall to be damaged but suspected that it may have been initiated by the heavy rainfall.

The Warner Park Cricket Stadium was not the only place that suffered damages. Several homes around the island were water-logged and yards as well as driveways were under water and silt.

Two vehicles were seriously damaged in College Street Ghaut and two more received minor damages in Westbourne Ghaut, while vehicular traffic had to divert to Central Street because of the large amount of silt and debris brought by the thunderstorm onto the Bay Road, between the two Ghauts.
