OAS Director in St. Kitts and Nevis Antigua Starret Greene |
BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS, JUNE 4TH 2006 - The Organisation of American States (OAS) 36th Regular Session of the General Assembly is expected to approve the Santo Domingo Declaration on Good Governance and Development in the Knowledge-Based Society.
This is according to Director of the OAS National Office in St. Kitts and Nevis, Mr. Starret Greene, who said that the issue of Good Governance and Development in the Knowledge-Based Society will be the focus of the dialogue
among hundreds of delegates during the June 4th to 6th meeting.
The Antiguay-born director explained that the OAS remained committed to promoting Good Governance in its 34 member countries and that he expected issues such as transparency, accountability in government activities, and probity to feature prominently in the debate.
The Assembly will bring together the Foreign Ministers and Heads of Delegations from the Hemisphere to discuss a number of critical issues and analyze various topics to include: fulfilling the commitments of the Inter-American Democratic Charter; advancing the fight against illegal drugs; combating human trafficking; strengthening the Inter-American system to protect human rights and combating organized crime of youth gangs.
Mr. Greene went on to say that there will be considerable discussion on the appropriate use of Information Technologies which he described as a powerful
tool in the fight against poverty and corruption.
"The use of information technology is indispensable to helping small countries such as St. Kitts and Nevis to address their socio-economic challenges and spurring their development", the OAS Director concluded.
St. Kitts and Nevis' Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr. the Hon. Timothy Harris, along with Permanent Representative to the OAS, His Excellency Dr.
Izben Williams and Minister/Counselor, Ms. Jasmine Huggins are representing the twin island Federation.
The General Assembly is the highest decision making body of the Organization
of American States and its decision makers are the Foreign Ministers of each
of the 34 independent countries in the Hemisphere.
