KINGSTON, Jamaica – AFTER being held in police custody for questioning for over two weeks, Dancehall artiste Vybz Kartel and his lawyer are planning on filing a lawsuit against the Jamaican government.

The Portmore Empire leader was taken into police custody on July 2 after hearing that he was wanted for questioning by the authorities. He was released on July 16 without being charged or fully aware of why he was detained.

According to 876Radio, his lawyer, Valerie Neita-Robertson, believes that the government overstepped its bounds with the prolonged detention of Kartel, and that he has lost money as a result of missed shows and appearances, both locally and in the Caribbean, which he would have been paid for.

Additionally, Neita-Robertson pointed out that the order of detention served on Kartel did not state a reason as to why he was being detained, and there was no specific offence which the police actually sought to question him about while detained.

The ‘Street Vybz Rum’ singer is said to have penned a number of songs while incarcerated. These songs, as reported, he would use to make an album.

One of Kartel’s latest tracks include ‘You Love Chat’ and he is expected to perform tonight (Jul. 22) at the 2010 Dancehall Night of the Reggae Sumfest concert.
