People's Action Movement Leader Lindsay Grant tours rainstorm affected areas

PAM Secretariat

BASSETERRE, St.Kitts, July 22nd 2010 (PAM Secretariat Press Release) - People’s Action Movement Leader Lindsay Grant toured areas in his constituency #4, particularly the village of Old Road to assess the damage done and distress caused to residents and homes in the area as a result of the passage of a rainstorm.

On Monday evening into Tuesday morning Torrential rains along with the blaring wails of thunder and ear-splitting sounds of lightning, bellowed across St.Kitts-Nevis, which resulted in 4 inches of rain  causing flash flooding in many low-lying areas.

The rain fell consistently during the day and increased its intensity in the night, resulting in impassable roadways, water-logged homes, silt-covered yards and mud covered driveways of some residents.

The recently re-elected Opposition party leader Grant, toured the area where he viewed first hand the damage caused by the flash-flooding including vehicles stuck along the road leading to the Old Road Police Station due to the tremendous amount of loose dirt or silt that was washed down into the area by the storm.

The mud, dirt and silt also completely covered driveways, vehicles and houses. It was revealed to Grant that it was the first time that mud, dirt and silt had ever washed into the area as it did for the storm. The residents and other persons including engineers have made a number of conclusions as to the root cause of the extra mud, silt and dirt.

According to the People’s Action Movement leader the situation may be another example of the gross lack of vision , foresight and simple common sense on the part of the government.

“I spoke to many residents during my visit to the Old Road area in the aftermath of what I would consider a “flash flood” and they have all expressed many concerns to me about what they feel are the causes for the tremendous inconvenience and in many cases damage that was caused by the rainfall,” said the People’s Action Movement Leader. “I will certainly do my part as the true representative of the people to raise and highlight these concerns and bring pressure on the government to quickly address the issues and concerns of my constituents,” Grant continued.
