BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – THE St. Kitts-Nevis Fire and Rescue Services has completed another successful Summer Safety Programme with an impressive closing ceremony in which the participants demonstrated what they learned over a three-day period.

The closing ceremony was held at the Basseterre Fire Station on Friday, July 23 and it was said that some 168 children between the ages of five and 12 were registered from the Nevis, Tabernacle, Sandy Point and Basseterre B, where they were taught safety tips on water, fire and traffic.

In giving an overview of the programme, Fire Sub-Officer Abdias Samuel said that the children were taught fire safety by members of the Fire Services, road safety by officers of the Police Force and water safety by the Coast Guard.

Samuel said he hoped the children would take what they learned over the past few days into their daily lives and wants to tell the Minister of National Security, Sam Condor, who officially opened the programme on July 21, that it is because of the programme there is a safe Federation.

The children were dressed in bright orange T-shirts that were sponsored by LIME, whose Corporate Communications Manager Laverne Caines thanked the Fire Services for their consistency with the nine-year programme.

“Much praise should be given to the Fire Services as they train people on what to do in case of a fire, along with water safety and traffic safety. The highest commendations from LIME is extended to the Fire and Rescue Services for taking time every year for the past nine years to teach you the basics of fire safety, water safety and traffic safety. We can’t ever take these things for granted,” she said.

Caines said it was five years ago that LIME was asked to sponsor the shirts and she encouraged the children to tell their close friends and family about the things they learned.

“If each of you promises to tell two people, we will have more boys and girls who will be just as brilliant as you are on all those things you learnt over the past three days. Even as you go to other summer camps and you want to share information, do share…you’re never too young to learn how to teach.”

Davean Gilbert and A-Jan Esdaille of Basseterre were presented the Deputy Fire Chief and Fire Chief Awards respectively.

For the Sandy Point area, Zicornella Marsham and Kareel Saunders also received the Deputy Fire Chief and the Chief Awards respectively. The Awards for Tabernacle Fire Chief and Deputy Fire Chief were given to J’nique Clarke and Khadia Clarke respectively, while on Nevis Kitalla Hanley was presented the Deputy Fire Chief award and Chylon Caines claimed the Fire Chief Award.

Three very entertaining and informative skits were displayed by the children, who made their presentations on the tips they learned during the three-day programme.
