BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – REIGNING National Carnival Queen Sudeakka Francis did herself and the twin-island Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis proud last evening (Jul. 30) when she gained the Second Runner-up position at the Miss Jaycees Caribbean Pageant.
The pageant was held in Antigua and in addition to placing third, Francis was awarded the prize for Best Performing Talent.
Miss Dominica Marcia Baptiste was crowned the 2010 Miss Jaycees Caribbean. She also won the awards for the Most Environmentally Inclined Contestant and the Best Evening Wear.
Baptiste is also the reigning Miss Caribbean World and she was the Second Runner-up at this year’s Miss Carival. And although she did not place in the Miss Caribbean Culture Pageant held in Nevis, she walked away with the Best Evening Wear award.
The First Runner-up was Miss Anguilla Sangrena Harris, who was voted Miss Congeniality, while Miss St. Lucia Iva Satney took the Third Runner-up position.
Miss Trinidad and Tobago won the Miss Photogenic and Best Swimwear awards, and Miss Montserrat won the Interview segment.
According to a related news item recently posted on SKNVibes, a press release from the Jaycees Committee stated that they were looking at fostering stronger ties within the Caribbean region and the 2010 winner would be tasked with promoting the mission and vision of the Junior Chamber International (JCI).
She will also be tasked with advocating for greater levels of inter-regional travel among the Caribbean islands.
Throughout her 2010-2011 reign, Miss Jaycees Caribbean’s task will be to sensitise citizens of the region and its governments on the devastating effects of Climate Change on the region and how Caribbean people can combat, cope and negate the effects.
The Miss Jaycees is said to be not just a pageant but a fundraiser project of the local JCI Antigua chapter to support community development projects of the organisation.
The pageant was executed under the theme ‘Integrating the Caribbean through Pageantry – Embracing the Effects of Climate Change’, along with a stage décor theme of: ‘A Tropical Fantasy’.
The pageant, which was in its 49th year, also saw contestants from Jamaica, Guyana, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, St. Croix and Barbados vying for the prestigious title.
