Best Player Indonesia 2010
On Sunday night, August 1st Sriwijaya FC beat Arema 2-1 in the Piala Indonesia final with Keith Kayamba Gumbs scoring the first goal and being awarded the Best Player in Indonesia for 2010.
The Piala final was held at Stadium Manahan in Javanese Solo.
No goals were scored in the first half of the final between Sriwijaya and Arema Indonesia and after a controversial situation at half time the tension rose to a peak in the packed out stadium as Kayamba headed the ball past Arema goalkeeper Kurnia Meiga.
The equalizer was a scored by M. Rihduan on a cross, bringing the nearly 50 000 Arema fans into a frenzy, but not too long after, to Arema’s dismay, Sriwijaya’s Pavel Solomin brought SFC into the lead.
Earlier, during the first half, the Arema captain Noh Alam Shah was given a red card, causing a stir amongst the home crowd.
In the half time break the Solo Chief of Police demanded the game suspended until the referee was replaced.
This caused a delay of almost forty five minutes before the problem was mediated and the game continued with the original referee on field, subsequently elevating the excitement of the fans and the anxiety of army and police stationed across the stadium.
When the whistle sounded Sriwijaya made history yet again as the reigning Indonesian champions three years in a row, winning four trophies in that time.
In the victory celebration Keith ‘Kayamba’ Gumbs was called to the podium and presented with the Best Player Indonesia 2010 trophy, a win he says left him speechless with pride and happiness.
“I don’t know how I feel; I don’t know what to say except that I’m so happy and proud of what Sriwijaya has accomplished.”
Coach Rahmad Darmawan, who led Sriwijaya to their victorious reign, went out with a bang, the emotion clearly written on his face as he concluded his last night as coach of SFC.
The football season is now at a close with Ramadan preparations underway in Indonesia. Puasa, the fasting month begins August 11th.
