BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – A man, who performed security duties at a recently-established grocery on Cayon Street in Basseterre, was today (Aug. 9) charged for stealing from his employer.

Travis Christmas of Dorset Village was charged with “Larceny” after he was caught on camera removing an undisclosed sum of money from an area for which he was supposed to be providing security.

Information reaching SKNVibes indicates that the 31-year-old was employed as a security guard at the Island Food Grocery, opposite Uncle T’s fast food outlet on Cayon Street.

It further indicates that on Friday, August 6, 2010, monies were removed from the cash registers and placed in a certain area where Christmas was seated in order to provide security. However, later in the evening when the proprietor, Alex Li, and some of his employees were counting the day’s earnings, they realised that a large amount was missing.

This media house learned that they made a search of the area with the hope of finding the missing money, but that was not to be. However, on reviewing the day’s recordings on the security cameras, Christmas was seen removing the money and putting it into his pocket.

On return to work the following day, he was apprehended by the police, who were informed of the incident, and taken to the Basseterre Police Station.

This was confirmed by Police Press and Public Relations Officer Inspector Zanhestel Hector, who stated that “Christmas was arrested on Saturday, August 7, 2010 and following investigations he was charged today with Larceny”.

When contacted for a comment, Li said, "Let the police deal with the matter."

SKNVibes also learned that Christmas, who had been working at the Island Food Grocery for just over a month, had told his employer that he was a member of the St. Kitts and Nevis Defence Force; a statement which was proven to be false.

“This,” a source said, “was the reason why Alex employed him as a security guard.”
