CHARLESTOWN, Nevis, August 11, 2010 (Press Release) - The Ministry of Sports summer program which commenced on Monday 9th August is going well so far.

According to Tennis Coach Anthony Webbe, some 21 students showed up for the first day on Monday and 26 showed up yesterday Tuesday. The children are being taught the basics in  the game of Tennis and yesterday for the most part focused on hitting the ball back over the net with the correct swing of the arm and correct body posture.

According to Webbe, he has noted a sense of enthusiasm and the interest level is high.  He sees quite some potential in the students.

The Tennis program is being conducted at the Tennis court at Stoney Grove.

Meanwhile, at the Grell Hull-Stevens netball complex, some 15 to 20 young girls were present yesterday as they learnt the basic skills of Netball.

Former West Indies Netball captain, Lydia Thompson-Claxton who is in charge of the training indicated that the initial step is to get the girls interested in the sport and  to help them to understand that the game of Netball can be fun. While that interest level is being peaked, the girls are being taught the fundamentals of the game.

Yesterday Mrs. Claxton taught some of the girls the basics in terms of shooting while the others learnt passing and intercepting skills under the watchful eyes of local Netballers Govanie manners and Shamyse Bartlette.

Coach Claxton is confident that the dream of Minister of Sports Hon Hensley Daniel in having an interprimary school Netball tournament by next year, will be realized.

Down at the Elquemedo Willet Park, Carl Tuckett ably assisted by Ralph Allen supervised ten lads who have been mixed with the development squad consisting mainly of the under 13 players who are training for an upcoming tournament.  Coach Tuckett is convinced that the numbers will increase next week but indicated that even the more skilled players were included in the training on the basics of the game.

The newcomers have gelled well with the more experienced ones and the sessions are going well he indicated.

Tuckett is quietly confident that his under 13 team will do exceptionally well in the upcoming St.Kitts-Nevis under 13 regional tournament which bowls off on Saturday 21st August, with Nevis meeting one of its sternest test with a battle against Trinidad and Tobago in the first encounter.

Tuckett feels that this first match would definitely be a guide in determining where Nevis will place in the overall standings.

The Nevis team placed second last year and Tuckett and his guards are determined to go one notch up this time around.
