Clandestine activity exposed by veteran BBC Journalist Bertram Niles

Basseterre, St.Kitts, August 15, 2010 (PAM Secretariat Press Release) - St.Kitts-Nevis Opposition Senior MP the Hon. Shawn K. Richards is expressing grave concern over a number of recent incidents involving the use of modern technology to invade the privacy of opposition parliamentarians in addition to other  clandestine activities.

“I am concerned and alarmed over a recent number of incidents involving my colleagues and opposition parliamentarians where certain individuals have been found to be taking audiovisual footage unknown to the individuals being taped,” said the 2nd term MP from Constituency#5.

During the past week, People’s Action Movement MP Hon. Eugene Hamilton was secretly filmed in a relaxed position before the official commencement of parliament. The video was then doctored to include sound effects giving the false impression that Hamilton was asleep during the parliamentary sitting. In addition, Hamilton’s personal handwritten notes were displayed on national TV station ZIZ while he was making his presentation. This is something that has never been done to any other parliamentarian in history, on either Government or Opposition Bench. The incidents are being perpetrated and undertaken allegedly by agents of the Labor Party government in efforts to undermine and destabilize the Opposition.

“It has also been drawn to my attention that several email accounts have been created that mimic the email accounts of different arms of the People’s Action Movement and bogus information has been disseminated from these email accounts to scores of regional news outlets,” said MP Richards. “We are going to launch our own investigations and get to the bottom of who sent the emails or email or who gave the instructions to disseminate it,” Richards indicated.

The Opposition People’s Action Movement Deputy Political Leader made the comments in light of a startling revelation which was made regarding information being sent out by person or persons using a number of email addresses purporting to be officers or agents of the People's Action Movement.

The clandestine activity was exposed by veteran BBC Journalist Bertram Niles who indicated to the People's Action Movement Public Relations Officer Wallis Wilkin that he had received an email from an address pamites2@gmail.com under the name 'PAM St.Kitts' and expressed some apprehension that based on the content of the email he had doubts that the email was legitimate. The PAM PRO confirmed to Mr. Niles that the email was not an official release of the People's Action Movement. It was also later revealed that WINN FM’s Senior Reporter Toni Frederick had received a similar release from the said bogus PAM email address.

People’s Action Movement Public Relations office has issued a notice to all media houses indicating the official email addresses of the People’s Action Movement Public Relations Office which are:

    pam.publicrelations@gmail.com

    pam.publicrelations@yahoo.com
