Road Town, Tortola - Works on the St. Thomas Bay, Virgin Gorda Port project are to culminate by the end of August.

Managing Director of the BVI Ports Authority (BVIPA), Mr. V. Victor O’Neal, said that he is very satisfied with the project, which begun in November of last year

The project is geared towards improving parking, storage and enhancing the aesthetics of the port area in St. Thomas Bay, Virgin Gorda. The projected total cost of the enhancements made at the port is $350,000, with a total of eight petty contractors assigned.

“I am very satisfied. It is a great development that will improve both the visitors’ and locals’ experience,” said Mr. O’Neal.

Improvements made include the increased parking of over 60 parking spaces with accommodation for handicapped persons. A new drainage system, flood lighting, new fencing for container storage area, new sidewalks, fencing on the St. Thomas Bay jetty to protect nearby beachgoers and a back-up generator have also been installed.

With regards to the new parking lots, the Managing Director said, “Now that there is more parking, it will make life a lot easier for those residents in Virgin Gorda who come to Road Town every day, and even other customers, who conduct business in or near the Port Authority Building.”

He concluded, “The BVI Ports Authority will continue to improve and enhance the functionality and aesthetics at all the Territory’s ports.”

The St. Thomas Bay port improvement project is in line with the Government’s plans to improve and expand present port facilities in the Territory, and to have them in full compliance with international security and operating standards, as well as to meet the growing needs of residents and visitors.
