CHARLESTOWN, Nevis, August 18, 2010 (Press Release) - The Nevis Under-13 cricket team went under to their Under-15 counterparts in a close game at the Elquemedo Willet park yesterday.
The under 13 team batted first and chalked up an impressive 141 for 4 from their 25 allotted overs.
Saeed Williams and Ross Powell led the way with an impressive century opening stand before Powell was stumped for 37. Williams went on to complete a well deserved half century before he too perished, holding out to an excellent jumping catch at mid wicket by Bervis Burke, as he attempted to clear the in field.
For the U-15, Sheon Hanley was the main bowler with 3 wickets and K. Browne picked up 1.
When the U-15 responded, the aggressive Adrian Williams seemed to be in a hurry to catch a plane and showed every intention of finishing the game early. One particular heave over long on off the bowling of Kezron Archibald was an absolute gem.
However, immediately after smashing fast bowler Ravi Sewdat down the ground for a straight four, he was clean bowled with a beauty from the same bowler which curved back from off to take his middle stump. He made 31. There after young Ravi lost the script and had to be removed from the attack as he was troubled with several calls of wide.
The U-15 then struggled to stay in the game as the lower order could not come to terms with the off spin of Philo Wallace who bagged 3 for 12 in an impressive spell.
Dymon Parris however managed to stay calm to the end and eventually secured victory for his team in the 23rd over of the nail biting encounter. He was 30 not out at the end.
Freeman collected 2 wickets, Ravi 1 and Smithen 1.
Asked if he was disappointed with his U-13 team, National Coach Stuart Williams indicated that on the contrary, he was pleased with the general performance of his young guards. “It’s the under 15’s they were playing you know—and they gave them a good run”, he stated.
He indicated that there were a few things that his team would need to work on: There were a few straight forward catches spilled; there were a number of wides bowled and there needs to be an improvement in the general fielding. Outside of that, the Coach congratulated the team on a generally good effort.
The U-13’s next travel to St.Kitts tomorrow to engage their Kittitian counterparts in a practice match, prior to the start of the regional U-13 tournament this coming weekend.
