Jay-Z

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - OVER the years’ Hip-Hhop has expanded and rappers have been popping up everywhere. Could it be for the fame, or is it for the money?

We see them on stations like BET, VH1 and Tempo ‘spitting’ about money, cars, women and sometimes even nothing which makes sense to many of us, but has one ever stopped to think why so many people are interesting in taking up a career in rapping.

Even here in little St. Kitts many have stretched their talents and have taken up what has now turned into an American culture. But after seeing a post by Forbes.com on the internet, which had the top rappers earnings, it is clear that there is without doubt money to be made in the Hip-Hop industry just as long as the growth potential of the artistes is focused on business.

Hip-Hop artiste Jay-Z, who is referred to as one as the number one in the business, topped a list of five for making US$63M over the past years while Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs, who was once called Puff Daddy but has changed his name several times, has earnings of US$30M.

Even though Mr. Carter, popularly known as Lil Wayne, is currently the hottest rapper out to date in many people’s opinion, Akon came in US$1M in front of him with US$21M.

Finally, there is Dr. Dre, who is old school in the Hip-Hop industry; he came in with US$17M.

Not only have rap artistes been making it big in the Hip-Hop industry, but many of them have transcended from rapping to acting. Rappers like DMX, Eminem, Eve, Drag On, Ice Cube and T.I have played major roles in a number of films.
