A series of strange hat tricks

Teams shake hands
By: Curtis Morton

CHARLESTOWN, Nevis, August 24, 2010 (Press Release) - As the 14th annual 13 and under regional tournament continued yesterday with round three of the exciting series of matches, two strange incidents had the cricketing pundits at the Elquemedo Willet Park, scratching their heads and digging into the records for answers.

The two incidents occurred during the match up between Dominica and Nevis. First up an obviously free flowing Ross Powell who has looked good all tournament, was run out for the third consecutive time.

In the three innings that the young wicketkeeper/batsman has played, he has been run out all three times: Twice in the twenties, as was the case yesterday and in the first match versus Antigua and Barbuda, he was agonizingly run out for 81.

The second incident occurred while Nevis was in the field.  A determined Dominica team had the wind virtually taken out of their sails when leg spinner Hakeem Harvey took the strangest of hat tricks:  He speared in three consecutive deliveries which were all missed by the three batsmen concerned and all three were sent on their way leg before wicket (LBW). Many cricketing pundits confirmed that hey had seen various types of hat tricks but that this was a first in a lifetime.

Nevis went on to win the match; even though Coach Stuart Williams was obviously not pleased with the way his charges concluded the game as they became a bit lack luster towards the end.

Nevis batted first and seemed in a spot of bother when they lost a few early wickets.  However, as has been the case in the previous two games, somebody played a special innings, while the remaining batsmen rallied around him. This time, it was the captain Clydre Smithen who played an attractive hand to get to a half century before he holed out in the final over, attempting a maximum.

The Dominicans were off to a positive response until the hat trick of lbws took a heavy toll on their batting. They however rallied towards the end of the overs to give the home town boys a bit of a scare as they seemed to have dropped their guards while they were comfortably on top.
