Jamaica contestant places second place in Miss Universe pageant

    Kingston, Jamaica - Jamaica’s Yendi Philips placed second in the 59th Miss Universe pageant Monday night in Las Vegas. Creating history as the highest ever placement by a Jamaican in that contest since it's inception.

     

    Yendi competed against 82 women from across the world.

     

    She was first runner up to Miss Mexico, Jimena Navarrete, if for any reason Miss Mexico cannot continue her reign as Miss Universe 2010, Phillipps, as the first runner-up, will assume the role.

     

    The second runner-up was Miss Australia, Jesinta Campbell; third runner-up, Miss Ukraine, Anna Poslavska; and fourth runner-up, Miss Philippines, Venus Raj.

     

    Miss Australia Jesinta Campbell won the Miss Congeniality Universe award. Miss Thailand Fonthip Watcharatrakul won Miss Photogenic Universe and a second award for having the best national costume.

     

    In the an interview with Television Jamaica’s magazine programme Smile Jamaica, the 2010 Miss Jamaica universe said she was elated and felt more prepared to do a great job in the pageant.

     

    Yendie was crowned Miss Jamaica World in 2007.

     

    She is the third woman to win both the Miss Jamaica Universe and Miss Jamaica World titles.

     

    The 24 year-old was now on the list of crowd favourites vying for the title of Miss Universes 2010.
