BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – LESS than one month before the Federation celebrates its independence from British rule, the Cabinet has informed its approval of a schedule of activities for the occasion.

A Post Cabinet Press Briefing dated August 23, 2010 indicated that Cabinet made the decision on that date to adopt the “schedule of activities for the celebration of the 27th Anniversary of our National Independence, September 19, 2010”.

While it does not specifically indicate the theme for this year’s observance, the Post Cabinet briefing hinted that “The theme which has been selected centres around the strengthening of families, the building blocks of our nation”.

It further informs that according to Cabinet’s reasoning, “Sustainable nation building” hinges on strong families and that “our most pressing challenges require that we take note of the need to strengthen families”.

The communiqué indicated that a number of this year’s activities are traditional, but it made no mention of whether or not the traditional features would be supplemented with innovative activities.

“Some of the activities for the 27th anniversary celebrations are a regular feature and include Schools’ Patriotic Programmes and Treat, Ministers visits to schools, the Prime Minister’s Lecture Series, the State Service, and the Wreath Laying Ceremony at the RLB Community Park in St. Pauls.”

Although not making mention of a specific time period, the release promises that “Details on the specific theme, the above-mentioned activities and other activities will be provided on the official Independence Celebrations Schedule to be fully revealed shortly”.

Coordinator of Independence Celebrations Activities Crios Freeman however told this media house that the schedule would be released within a week’s time.
