Burning Flames bass player hospitalised

ST. JOHN’S, Antigua – A prayer on Blackberry Messenger was in circulation for the bass player of Burning Flames Band, Krokus, as news spread quickly of his involvement in a motor accident on Friday afternoon (Aug. 27).

According to reports by Antigua Observer, David Edwards, better known as Krokus, was driving a Mitsubishi Evolution at around 3:15 pm Friday when he lost control of the car, hitting two other vehicles in the process.

And while reports that Edwards suffered life-threatening injuries have been making the rounds on social networking sites and mobile devices, a hospital spokesperson said he was in stable condition and does not appear to be in grave danger.

The media house went on to say that the others involved were also taken to the hospital and, so far, all except one are in stable condition. The other is in critical condition, though details of her injures are still unclear.

Edwards, who is also known as Bubb I or Lord Satelyte, is one of the original and longest standing members of the Burning Flames Band, the 2010 Road March champs of Antigua.

The Soca-band is the best-known Antiguan music group. They were formed in 1985 by brothers Clarence ‘Oungku’ Edwards (keyboard and vocals), Toriano ‘Onyan’ Edwards (guitar and vocals), David ‘Krokus’ Edwards (bass) and Laban ‘Mente’ Edwards (drummer), who was later replaced by Rone ‘Foxx’ Watkins.

Their first hit-single was ‘Stylee Tight’ which won them their first Road March title. They have since won this title on 14 other occasions.

Onyan quit the group in 1996 due to a falling out with his brothers and Onika Bostic became the new vocalist next to Bandleader Oungku. Bostic died following a car accident late 2004 and Oungku left the band sometime in 2005 to form the Red Hot Flames, while Onyan rejoined the Burning Flames as lead singer.

Now the two bands, lead by brothers, continue to feud against each other and create controversy in Soca music. Songs like ‘Bullbud’ by Burnning Flames and ‘Woottup’ by Red Hot Flames are evidence of such controversy between the two.

Many are wondering if this accident would reunite the brothers, but this is left to be seen.
