More shark sightings possible

By: Cherisse M. Sutton-Jeffers, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERE, St. Kitts- LASTWEEK, SKNVibes posted a story, captioned, ‘Stingrays and shark disrupts Cockle Shell Beach.’ A follow up was done recently to ascertain the beach going public need to take any extra safety measures.

Upon contacting the St. Kitts Fisheries and speaking with the manager, Ralph Wilkin, Manager of the St Kitts Fisheries Department, said he was not aware of the situation and was learning of it for the first time as he was off island during the sighting.

He noted however that during the summer time it is traditional for a greater number of persons to frequent local beaches and although sharks are always hunting for food, this is the time of year when they are roaming more often and so the chances of sightings are greatly increased.

In regard to the stingrays, Wilkin commented “it is common to see stingrays around here. There is no particular time for stingrays to be sighted in large numbers.”

When it was posted, the story generated a number of comments and responses by persons who claimed to have seen stingrays at various beaches around the island as well.

Wilkin is appealing to the public and other persons who may be visiting the beaches to be careful and vigilant.
