‘Phresh Kutt’…new group moving out of the shadows and on the rise.

By: Cherisse M. Sutton-Jeffers, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – EVER met an artiste who can ‘rip it’, ‘spit it’ and sing it? SKNVibes is pleased to introduce, not one but six such artistes who comprise the very versatile music group ‘Phresh Kutt Muzik’

Even before listening to their music, one can tell just by the unique spelling of the group’s name that these artistes are indeed bringing something fresh and different to the local entertainment scene.

Known for their famous phrase “We them boyz who do muzik” Ballikup, Jawwa, Conkara, Shaun-Don, Rudii the producer  and their female songbird Karina are the members of Phresh Kutt Muzik, all of whom hail from villages on the eastern side of the country but have established their studio ‘Phresh Kutt Records’ in Cunningham Village( Shanty Town) in  Cayon.

According to three members who spoke with SKNVibes PEP in an exclusive interview, none of the six artistes is a stranger to music, they have all been writing and singing separately for some time now but decided to come together as a group just before they started their own studio about six months ago.

“We just want to do every type of music in a different aspect and show the various ways in which we can make a dancehall track or hip hop track sound” said one of the artistes who goes by Ballikup.

Jawwa who resides in Keys Village said, “It has been a while since Shanty Town and Keys wanted to get together and make music so when the opportunity came we just took it.”

Conkara, another member added that while Phresh Kutt Muzik  is versatile enough to play all types of music,  the members invest a lot of time talking about things other people would not talk about. “We are a fresh face on the music scene and we are always bringing out new tracks therefore we are Phresh Kutt literally” he added.

The young musicians said, while many persons use music as a springboard to fame, for the members of the group, this is not the objective, for them it is a voice, social commentary and a way of educating people. The members observed that it’s not everybody who watches the news but most people listen to music and we sing about real life experiences and issues which are being hidden in society.

The group has done a number of songs to date; all of which each member pens their own verse. The group currently has a new song titled ‘Good Die Young’ of which a music video is expected to be released shortly.

‘Good Die Young’ features all of the members with the exception of Rudii. The song is very emotional and speaks of persons lost from the lives of individual members. It also carries a strong message and is very appealing to the listening audience.

Although, the group has never performed for any major event as yet; it has made a few appearances at the monthly Island Xpressions open mic night where they have received great feedback on their music.
