Another Nevis all time Cricket team presented

Walter Morton
Press Release

Basseterre, St. Kitts - In response to a challenge by Sportscaster Curtis Morton for persons to name a Nevis all time Crciket team, another possible team along with the rational for selection has been submitted.  This time the ‘selector’ is Cricket commentator Walter Morton.  Here is his submission in batting order:

    Stuart Williams (Vice Captain)
    Livingston Lawrence
    Livingston Sargeant (Captain)
    Sallo  Howell
    Keith Authurton
    Carl Tuckett
    Everette Sargeant (Wicket Keeper)
    Derrick Parry
    Elquemedo Willett
    John Maynard
    Lipton Griffin

Had Earl Rawlins as a strong contender for opening batsman.

Runako Morton was a strong contender for no 3  or 4 spot
Ray Phillip I think was the best wicket keeper we had but went with Everette Sargeant because of his batting.

Dean Thompson was considered but had to go with Derrick Parry as a the off spinner
Austin Browne, Vance Amory and Bernette Thompson were also considered for opening duties
Alison Liburd was also considered as the all rounder but could not leave out Carl Tuckett.

Found the fast bowling cupboard somewhat bare so I believe I have picked the two best.

My team has a very strong batting line up and may be lacking the extra specialist bowler but I think my four main bowlers are more than capable of bowling out any team.  Also considered the thought that all our test players should be automatic picks but this was probably over shadowed by the fact that I consider Livingston Sargeant the best Nevisian batsman of all time.

I also considered Barrett who I have heard a lot about but never saw him for myself. I want to also state that I also considered Ed Arthurton,  Mac Parris, Oretus Jones, Theodore Walters, Harold Walters, Lewis Newton and Dermoth Jones.

Other persons interested in submitting their all time team can submit to Curtis Morton at: sandopey@hotmail.com.

    Coach Williams Pleased with team
Coach of the Nevis 13 and under cricket team, Stuart Williams last week expressed his congratulations to his young charges for placing second in the recently concluded Government of St.Kitts and Nevis 14th annual regional 13 and under cricket tournament.

“Of course I would have liked the number one spot but generally the Nevis team played really well.  What people have to realize is that Nevis came up against really tough opposition in the finals.  For instance those two openers virtually batted us out of the game”, said Williams.  He had high praise for the batting of the Barbados opening batsmen in Akil Greenidge and Lee Gaskin who he believes have the potential ‘to go places”.

He also indicated that the majority of the Nevis players have the potential to go to the highest level, once they are prepared to continue to work hard at their game.

Kim Clijsters to meet Venus Williams in US Open semis

Defending champion Kim Clijsters came through a desperately scrappy US Open quarter-final to set up a tantalising last-four clash with Venus Williams.
Williams, the third seed, battled past Francesca Schiavone 7-6 (7-5) 6-4 in a late-running daytime match on Arthur Ashe Stadium.
And Clijsters then opened the night session with a 6-4 5-7 6-3 victory over Australian fifth seed Sam Stosur.

Both Williams and Clijsters are chasing their third titles at Flushing Meadows.

Williams, 30, had won all seven previous meetings with Schiavone, including two this year, but the Italian poses a greater threat since winning her maiden Grand Slam title in Paris.

So it proved in the early stages as neither player could establish any dominance on serve on another blustery New York night, and after two breaks apiece it came down to a tie-break.

Schiavone recovered from 4-1 down and a beautiful drop volley had the sixth seed clenching her fist at 5-5, but two forehand errors followed and she all but handed Venus the set.
The American took control early in the second set but she twice let breaks slip before dismantling the Schiavone serve once again to close it out in game 10.
