Basseterre, St Kitts- Local activities planned in observance of annual ENO World Tree Planting Day.

Peace is Green is the theme under which ENO Tree Planting Day will be observed internationally, September 21st this year. The 2010 observance will focus on two global concerns, the environment and peace. In the Federation UNESCO will spearhead local activities, one of which, a tree planting exercise on September 21st when one hundred fruit trees donated by the Department of Agriculture will be planted at different locations in the area stretching between Cayon and Christ Church.

The Department through this contribution to the event intends to further demonstrate its commitment to food security in the country. The second activity is aimed at discovering the literary skills of High School students who have been invited to compete for attractive prizes in a “PEACE IS GREEN” poetry contest already in progress and which will close on 13th September.

Jacqulin Christopher, Community Development Officer is now receiving entries at the Community Development Department. Christopher told SKNVibes that the corporate community has shown tremendous support to the competition and is contributing a number of prizes. The student submitting the best poem will enjoy a one night stay at the Marriott, a dinner for two at Rituals and will also be presented with the winner’s trophy.

The student placing second will be awarded one night’s stay at Frigate Bay Resort, a gift certificate from Island Hopper and a Certificate of Appreciation while the student who places third will receive a gift certificate from Karibhanna, a Certificate of Appreciation and a ‘Back to School’ package from Best for Less.

Mrs. Christopher explained that ENO is an acronym for Environment Online, a global virtual school and network for sustainable development and environmental awareness which encourages schools to study environmental themes on a weekly basis throughout a school year. According to Christopher, schools in some one hundred and twenty four countries, including all high schools and two primary schools in St. Kitts are members of ENO.
