BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – The Court of Appeal of the Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court will begin hearing appeals  when it sits in St. Kitts and Nevis on Monday, September 13 until September 17 with several matters coming before the court including an appeal against a conviction for murder.

One of the first matters listed on the calendar of cases is that of Ruedeney Williams, Sheldon Isaac, Romeo Cannonier and Louis Gardner who are appealing against a sentence for murder.

The four men were convicted of the murder of Gavin ‘Magilla’ Gilbert and were sentenced to death by hanging by the then Presiding Judge, Justice Albert Redhead.

According to a report on SKNVibes, Justice Redhead, who had listened to pleas in mitigation presented by the lawyers representing the convicted men, on July 15, indicated that having reviewed the psychiatric and social enquiry reports which were submitted on the convicted men the court decided to impose the death penalty. Justice Redhead   at that time of sentencing, declared“…you will be taken from here to a place of safety where you shall be kept until you are hanged by the neck, until you are dead and your body be buried within the walls of the prison and may God have mercy on your soul.”

While it was the only conviction for three of the four men, Cannonier has a double sentence for murder hanging over his head.

Another case which is being appealed is that of Karim Dickenson, Ramie Gumbs, Devon Wattley and Jamal Parris who were all jointly convicted of Robbery and Assault while George Douglas, Cleon Francis and Junior Freeman are appealing their conviction for Wounding with intent.

The status hearing involving the following persons will also be heard; Everette Allen, Ricky Ferlance, Philmore Matthew, Juan Fyfield, Dean Boddie and Louis Richards.

Several magisterial criminal appeals against convictions will also be heard including; Casimir Herbert  who will appeal his conviction for ‘Driving without Insurance and License, Livingston Martin is appealing his conviction of Battery, Rudolph Morton  will appeal his conviction of Driving without Due Care and Attention while Joevin Dowell will appeal his conviction of Assault.
