Basseterre, St. Kitts - Mr. Clifford Powell aka "Pompolito’ has responded to a challenge by Sportscaster Curtis Morton for Cricket fans on Nevis to come up with an all time Nevis cricket X1. His proposal extends to the winner actually receiving $3,000.00 US. Here is the full text of the correspondence sent to Mr. Morton.
“Dear Mr. Curtis Morton,
My name is Clifford Powell (affectionately known in Nevis as “pompolito"). I am from Grove Park Range and I am proud to say that my new Nevis address is Elquemedo Willet Parker Range, Nevis. I am a first time writer, but not a first time listener to your program.
You have started some serious sports discussions in Nevisian circles throughout America, the United States Virgin Island and I am sure where ever Nevisians are socializing.
I am residing in St. Croix. Since this sports discussion goes way back, we should form a committee and give a prize to the winner of the best team say, ($ 3000 us). I will be the first to make my contribution. The winner should donate his/her prize money to the Nevis cricket association. You can pick the three leading teams and set up a system for us to vote on the internet. I will be sending my team some time on the weekend.
Ardent cricket fan,
Clifford Powell”
Sportscaster Morton in his response has received the suggestion with great enthusiasm. However, he is in turn fine tuning the proposal with the following suggestions.
1. He will collaborate with the Nevis Cricket Association, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Sports-Mr. Alsted Pemberton and the Hon Carlyse Powell who is an experienced Sports Administrator to get a committee in place to assess the teams submitted
2. All teams will be widely publicized and interested persons can vote on the team of choice
3. Voting can be done through established web sites like the Nevis pages and SKNVibes
4. The money will be raised by soliciting contributions from interested persons like Mr. Powell
5. The winner will receive the $3,000.00 US but should be allowed to keep it
6. However, contributors will be asked to make an additional donation to the Nevis Cricket Association towards the management of cricket on the island of Nevis. For example, if a contributor indicates that he/she would donate $50.00 US to the winner, he/she would hopefully add an additional $10.00 US for the Nevis Cricket Association
Morton is also appealing for other suggestions as to how this idea may be made a reality.
Here are some more teams that were submitted yesterday:
Earl Clarke’s proposed team:
STUART WILLIAMS
LIVINGSTONE LAWRENCE
RUNAKO MORTON
KEITH ARTHURTON

Nevisian cricketers show support
A number of present and past Nevis cricketers showed their solidarity with the families of two individuals whose funeral services were held yesterday on Nevis.
At the Wesleyan Holiness Church in Charlestown, the funeral service for the late Austin Nathaniel Clarke was held. He was the father of former Nevis speedsters Dennis and Vern Clarke who are both still active members of the Pennyless Allstars club.
At the St.George’s Anglican church in Gingerland there was an even greater representation by former and present cricketers and members of the Nevis Crciket Association in honour of the late Shirley Hanley who was the aunt of West Indies player Runako Morton who flew in from Trinidad for the funeral. She was also the mother in-law of former Nevis player and Administrator, Oscar Walters.
The Nevis Crciket Association extends sincerest condolences to the grieving families.
