Drag Race off---but on!

Press Release

Basseterre, St. Kitts - The major Drag racing event that had been planned for the Independence weekend has been postponed.  The sad news was released late last night after a meeting between local Dragsters, members of the Dag racing Unit and chief coordinators of the event, Pudgy Productions.

The massive event was originally planned in three phases: A boat was scheduled to have left Trinidad with approximately 10 cars and pick up more cars in St. Vincent and Antigua, en route to Nevis. The boat was scheduled to arrive in Nevis late Thursday night, with a grand free car show scheduled for Friday at the Villa.  The big races were then set to be held on Saturday and Sunday of the Independence weekend.

Word received from the Drag Racing Unit and Pudgy Productions indicate that due to the heated activity currently in the tropics with three named storms currently passing through in: Igo, Julia and Carl, it was decided that the boat could not risk travelling in such unfavourable weather and therefore the overseas participation would be absent for this upcoming weekend.

The good news is though that although the grand event has been pushed back to a date to be determined in the not too distant future, the Drag racers of Nevis in the meeting last night, insisted that they were wiling to hold a meet for the Drag racing fans on the island.

There will therefore be a race card at the St.James’ Raceway this coming weekend but one with a local flavour. Despite sharing a few concerns, the Drag racers enthusiastically all voted to have the event.  Their concerns included the following:  A revision of the registration fee; a revision of the prize monies; request for the 14 seconds race to be reinstated.

The Drag racing Unit has indicated that all of the concerns will be addressed shortly.  However, the event will run over two days:  On Saturday 18th September, the Drag racers will be at the race way from very early and will have a registration deadline of 12 noon. They will then be engaged in testing their vehicles and the inspection process.  The general public will be allowed to the raceway free of cost on that day.  On Sunday 19th –Independence Day, the actual races which will involve local racers will take place.  Final word is yet to be received about participation of racers from sister island St.Kitts.  The public will be charged to view the races on that day.

According to the information received, the meeting was held in a cordial atmosphere and was very productive.  The Drag racers of Nevis are promising their fans a  really good show for the weekend and are eagerly awaiting the new date for the mega event which it is said will be even bigger and better than originally advertised.
