Press Release

Charlestown, Nevis - History was created at the Elquemedo T Willet Park on Monday 20th September during the ceremonial parade to mark the 27th Anniversary of Independence in the Federation of St.Kitts and Nevis.

First of all, it was the first time that such a parade would have been held at the Park since its renaming ceremony earlier this year.  Secondly, for the first time in the history of the parade, the Nevis senior cricket squad was represented in impressive attire as they marched along with the other uniformed bodies.

The squad was led by Malcolm Ramsey, the Manager of the team who marched impressively to the strains of the Nevis Symphonic band, with his arms swinging in proper timing.

It must have been a very proud moment for the Premier of Nevis, the Hon Joseph Parry as the cricketers passed in front of him and Ramsey smartly took the salute.  The Premier himself has been an outstanding administrator of cricket in Nevis and throughout the Caribbean.

The parade which probably had the most uniformed bodies for a long time and an extremely large turn out by the spectators, was not without its flaws however.  It was noted that the some of the cricketers took an unofficial ‘water break’ during the awards ceremony and when Malcolm Ramsey was asked to ‘fall out’ along with the other leaders of the various groups, it was noted that he went left when everybody else went right—but it was all great entertainment value for the huge crowd on hand.

The general comments however were positive and most persons present expressed that it was a great initiative on behalf of President Ronald Powell and the Nevis Crciket Association.  It was also noted that the cricketers arguably received the warmest round of applause as they passed in front of the pavilion.

It is hoped that this will become an annual feature of the parade.

    End
