Basseterre, St. Kitts - A depleted looking Seventh day Adventist Jets team showed up at the Russels Rest Prison farm on Nevis to engage the men in blue in a friendly cricket match on Monday 20th September-a public holiday. So depleted was the SDA team that they were forced to borrow four players from the opposing team.
Apparently most of the other players had other previous engagements.
The SDA team won the toss and chose to bat first. After the first two overs, it seemed as if the SDA team was set for a run away total with Captain Venrick Newton smashing no fewer than three sixes in the first over and Curtis Morton senior followed up with two mighty big ones of his own in the second. However, they both soon departed and then the innings fell apart. Suddenly they were struggling on 32 for 5.
However, Ronald ‘Jamaikie’ Bartley came together with Sheryl Sutton in a face saving partnership. The plan was simple: Bartley punished anything short or full enough, mostly for the maximum, while Sheryl blocked with both bat and feet and nudged the singles when possible. It was a frustrating time for the Prison Farm bowlers.
The SDA innings eventually folded on 90 for 7 from their allotted 15 overs.
The men in blue started their response slowly and seemed at the deep end when after 9 overs they were struggling to get the ball away on 40 for 1. Curtis Morton Senior bowled his 3 overs for a mere 9 runs and Venrick Newton was virtually unplayable with his ‘floaters’ with just 4 runs coming from his first 2 overs.
However, the game made a total right about turn as the two females were brought into the attack—both having obvious difficulties with the sloped run up. Judy Morton was smashed for 31 from her 2 overs and Sheryl Sutton was hit for 21 from her single over. The match ended with the flurry of boundaries and the men in blue celebrated in style.
The SDA team is hoping for a rematch at the nearest opportunity.
