Press Release

Basseterre, St. Kitts - Manager of the Brand ‘Slybo’ Stoney Grove Strikers, Nevis’ current champions of Football, Gary Claxton, has revealed that the number six jersey formerly worn by ace Nevisian Footballer Morrell ‘Slybo’ Newton will soon be ‘retired’.  This in honour of the man arguably rated as the best Footballer ever to come out of Nevis.

Claxton indicated that a formal ceremony will be held in the near future but that he is just waiting on some preliminary features to be completed.

The ceremony is scheduled to be held at the new bus stop located next to the Charlestown Pre School and top notch local Artist, Vaughn Anslyn has been commissioned to complete the following:

A full portrait of the late Footballer on one side

A portrait of the ‘retired’ number six jersey on the other.

Once these features are completed, the ceremony will be held.

Claxton further indicated that on the afternoon of the ceremony, the St.Paul’s Football team which previously retired the jersey worn by Morrel in representing that team, will be invited over and immediately after the ceremony at the Bus stop, the action will move to the ET Willet Park where both teams will engage in what is expected to become an annual event for the coveted “Slybo Cup’.

Morell ‘Slybo’ Newton before his untimely passing several years ago represented the Stoney Grove Strikers, Nevis, St.Paul’s and also the St.Kitts –Nevis team.  He was also known to be adept at virtually any other sport that had anything to do with a ball.
