SKTU celebrates Teachers’ Week with Route March

By: Cherisse M. Sutton-Jeffers, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – THE streets of Basseterre were flooded with blue shirts yesterday morning (Oct. 5) as the St. Kitts Teacher’s Union (SKTU) marched in celebration of this year’s Teacher’s Week.

Hundreds of teachers and many people in solidarity, dressed in shirts superimposed with the theme ‘The Legacy of a teacher last beyond a lifetime’, marched through the streets of downtown Basseterre to drums and singing lustily.

Also present on the march were contestants for the inaugural Teacher’s Pageant as well as a group of cheerleaders.

The Annual Teachers’ Week of activities began on Saturday, October 2 and will end on Saturday, October 9. The officially opening was held on Sunday (Oct. 3) with a church service which was followed by a radio programme, while Monday was recognised as Teachers’ Appreciation Day and Tag Day.

The week of activities continue today with a conference on ‘Building Strategic Partnership for Education’ and a radio call-in programme on the ‘Challenges and Demands in Teaching’. Tomorrow there will be ‘Zonal Visits to Retired Teachers’ and a SKTU Awards Dinner later in the evening.

On Friday, the nation will witness, for the first time in the history of Teachers’ Week celebrations, seven teachers vying for the title of St. Kitts Teachers Union Queen, which will be held along with a Calypso Show at Carnival Village.

The curtains will come down on the week of activities with a Community Outreach Project on the following day.
