Another national appointed to the High Court

    BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS, OCTOBER 7TH 2010 (CUOPM) – Another national has been appointed as an Acting Judge of the Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court.

     

    Acting Secretary of the Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court Judicial and Legal Services Commission, Dorcia James-Callendar has informed Registrars in the nine jurisdictions that Kittitian-born Attorney at Law, Mr. Anthony Gonsalves, has been appointed to act as a High Court Judge of the Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court.

     

    The appointment is from 1st October to 31st October 2010.

     

    Mr. Gonsalves has been assigned to Antigua and Barbuda.

     

    He replaces St. Kitts and Nevis new Resident Judge His Lordship Mr. Justice Errol Thomas.

     

    Anthony Gonsalves is a Senior Partner in the law firm of Gonsalves Perkins & Hamel-Smith in St. Kitts and Nevis. He is also a partner in the law firm of Hamel-Smith in Trinidad.
     
    Mr. Gonsalves specializes in commercial and corporate law, securities law, property development and conveyancing and complex fraud litigation.
     
    He was a consultant to the ECCB in its capital markets programme and was intimately involved in the drafting of the regional Securities Act. He has represented various regional financial institutions in a number of investment banking transactions and has advised extensively on the provisions of the Securities Act and the Regulations made thereunder.
     
    Mr. Gonsalves also participated in the Corporate Governance Forum held by the ECCB and made a presentation on shareholder rights which highlighted the St. Lucia Companies Act.
     
    Mr. Gonsalves holds an LL.B. degree from the University of the West Indies, an LL.M degree from Cambridge University and a Legal Education Certificate of Merit from The Sir Hugh Wooding Law School.
     
    He is a former President of the St. Kitts and Nevis Bar Association (2002-2004), a former Board Member and Legal Advisor-Roman Catholic Schools Board in St. Kitts and a former member of the Social Security Board, St. Kitts and Nevis.
