BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – THE Federations’ footballers were declared winners of the Group B Digicel Cup games yesterday (Oct. 10) at Victoria Park in St. Vincent after an important tie breaker rule came into play for the first time in the Digicel Cup.

The three teams, St. Kitts, Barbados and St. Vincent, were all tied at five points at the end of the Group B round of matches.

Most sports personnel and pundits as well as fans thought that St. Vincent would have placed first while Barbados would have taken the second position and St. Kitts third, based on the goal differences. However, while St. Kitts had a goal difference of four, Barbados had five and St. Vincent seven.

Due to the fact that none of the three teams were able to defeat each other, it was left up FIFA regulations, which came into effect in 2007, to determine the winner from the tie breaker rules.

Team St. Kitts was declared the winner after it had the highest goal average for the matches played between the tied teams (excluding matches played against Montserrat).

Team St. Kitts will now move on to the next stage of the competition.
