Basseterre, St. Kitts - St Kitts Nevis Senior National Football Team will advance to the second round of the Digicel Caribbean Cup. The St Kitts-Nevis team was given the news late Sunday night that they will advance to the second round of the tournament base on the FIFA tie breaker rule. This is the first time that the FIFA tie breaker was used in the tournament. The FIFA tie breaker was first introduced to the CONCACAF region in 2007.
At the end of the tournament all three teams had secured five points as they all won one game and tied two games each. The three teams were also tied on goal differences. The deciding factor was the goals scored by the tied teams. St Kitts-Nevis scored two goals while Barbados and St Vincent and the Grenadines scored one goal each.
The St Kitts-Nevis team arrived in the Federation this morning and was met by the Honourable Glen Phillip, Minister of Sports, Deputy Prime Minister Honourable Sam Condor, Permanent Secretary Lloyd Lazar, and Stanley Jacobs General Secretary of the SKNFA as well as management of the SKNFA and well wishers of the team.
The team was congratulated by both the Hon. Glen Phillip, and Deputy Prime Minister Hon. Sam Condor. Words of encouragement were given by Stanley Jacobs as the team faces an even more difficult task in the second round of competition.
Coach Clinton “Tinnie” Percival also thanked the team for doing their best in this leg of the tournament and promised that we will do much better in the second round.
The second round of the tournament is scheduled in Grenada from the October 22-26. Practice will resume later this week for the team as they prepare to meet Grenada, Guadeloupe and Puerto Rico in the second round.
